Calder Woodlands comprise three contigous woodlands, known locally as Chapelholme, Brigholme and Crake Nest. Together they form part of a much larger area of woodland which flanks the River Calder. Over the years, nature and conservation has been the prime objective, with a Tree Preservation Order protecting the woodland, and well-established flora and fauna, the lush carpets of woodrush, dense patches of bilberry and in the spring fantastic displays of bluebells and wild garlic demonstrate vast array of habitat and wildlife on offer. Calder Woodlands is a splendid Ancient semi-natural woodland of a mixture of primarily ash-hazel, oak and beech trees on a southeast facing slope with a plantation of semi-mature oak and sycamore forming a strip along the northwest boundary. There are occasional mature Larch and Douglas Fir.

The wood benefits from good roadside access and includes a parking area. To the rear of the parking area is a former sandstone quarry that is abundant with ferns.
