GABLES FARM HISTORY "Quoted from the Timber-Frame Buildings of Nottinghamshire"
Gables Farm is one of the most picturesque of Nottinghamshire's timber-frame buildings, but up until the 1980's it was hidden from view behind damaging cement render. Now beautifully conserved the close studding of the wings is plain for all to see from the roadside. Tree ring analysis along with in-depth analysis of the architecture, has established that the house began life as a medieval hall in 1266, with an aisle and cross passage. By the Tudor period the hall was floored over, with a fireplace and chimney with gave improved heating and first floor accommodation. The house plan also expanded with the addition of two wings, set at right angles, one to each end of the ball, creating a symmetrical frontage and H plan layout that was fashionable at the time. One wing has been investigated through tree-ring dating and supports the theory that the wings were added around 1540.
