Rowney Priory was a small religious Abbey
for Benedictine Nuns founded in or around
1164.
The Priory ceased to have any religious status at the dissolution of the monasteries in 1535, during the reign of Henry VIII. Subsequently the site went into private ownership and for several centuries it was a farmhouse. Thereafter several notable
people such as the Irish Composer Sir Michael William Balfe (best known for his Opera The Bohemian Girl) resided here between 1864 - 1874. In 1882 it was purchased by Mr J H Dugdale who
commenced significant change and by the turn of the 20th century the building and gardens as we see them today had been created.
The Property
This charming family home now being offered for the first time to the market in over 43 years includes almost 3,500 square feet of grand, elegant accommodation, presented in a traditional style with a wealth of period features. There is an
impressive wood panelled reception hall with a turning staircase and a galleried landing above, together with a well-proportioned sitting room of 29ft, with a south-facing bay window, French doors
opening onto the large terrace and a fireplace fitted with a wood burning stove. There is also a formal dining room and a kitchen with cream storage units, wooden worktops and an integrated hob and oven.
To the first floor there are three spacious double bedrooms, one of which has an en suite shower room, plus a family bathroom.
Adjoining the main house there are three well-proportioned comfortable apartments, 2 & 3 currently producing rental incomes. The ground floor apartment has a sitting room and two double bedrooms, there is also an open-plan kitchen and breakfast room, plus a shower room and en suite
bathroom. The second apartment, on the first floor, has two sitting rooms and three bedrooms, two of which are very generous doubles, plus a fully fitted kitchen and breakfast room, an en suite shower room and a bathroom. The third apartment, on the second floor, has two double bedrooms with fitted storage, a sitting room, a family room and a dining room, plus a well-equipped kitchen, an en suite bathroom
and an additional shower room.
