DESCRIPTION
Walter Gropius was a famous German architect, widely renowned as one of the pioneering masters of the international modernist style and founder of the Bauhaus. Together with Sir Maxwell Fry, an English architect, they are responsible for the design of this exceptional property.
The modernist style that they adopted was based on new and innovative technologies whilst embracing a minimalist and functional form.
The house, being the only known weather-boarded design by Gropius in England and mentioned in Pevsner’s Buildings of England and featured in Country Life articles, has a teak frame with brick infill and cedar external cladding with copper detailing under a slightly sloping felt roof. The present owners have extended the property largely in keeping with the original build including cedar cladding with copper detailing and a sedum (living green) flat roof.
Great care has been taken to retain/restore as many of the original features as possible, several of which are specifically referred to in the Grade II listing of this historical building, including three copper light fittings, door furniture and window casements by Zeiss of Germany, and a rather impressive beige marble topped dining table.
Whilst retaining the essence of the property, the owners have replaced the central heating system with a pressurised system with water softener. They have also significantly extended the property to create an impressive kitchen wing to the house.
