DESCRIPTION The village of Blagdon is set in the beautiful Mendips and one of those places where you instantly feel at home. The current owner was bought up in the village but moved out in her teens, and when the opportunity came - moved back into the village 13 years ago. "We were renting a property in the village at the time, we were just out on a walk when we came across it and I said to my husband, 'we are going to live there' - even though the house was not on the market. "But the seed had been planted and I couldn't get this period home out of my mind. Around 6 months later it was on the market, and although my husband had never been inside the house - he trusted me enough to put in an offer, and the rest is history."

Although her husband couldn't believe this house would be theirs, when he did get to see the inside - was a little disappointed. He told me "The exterior of the home is stunning, you can't deny the architectural beauty of this old Somerset long house, but it was internally where my heart sunk. Although fully renovated in the late 1980s - lots of the character of the property had been covered up, but I knew that we could bring that back."

The history
Built in 1580, it is one of the oldest homes in Blagdon, with its original end being Tudor. Exactly 100 years later it was massively extended. There are many glorious features, from the inglenook fireplaces, to the original cross beam in the dining room, and then there's that incredible door that leads up the stone spiral staircase, which still remains. Grade II listed, some of the features have historical significance, such as the original hand-painted decorations on the mantel of the fireplace in the bathroom.

Sadly, in the late 1980s this piece of history was pretty much derelict, but in 1989 it was renovated. You could say the present owners have been renovating it afresh over the last 12 years, although they prefer to see it as 'bringing it back to life'. To them, this was a forever home, so no matter what they did they took their time and used the finest of materials - the kitchen is all handmade with oak, with granite worktops and quality appliances.

What it offered
When the couple were looking for a home they also wanted a property that was big enough for the owner's mother to live with them too. This property offered them the dual living they sought and, when her mother moved back home a couple of years later, it became the perfect family home. "We loved the large garden and with this being 0.2 of an acre and offering wonderful privacy, once inside the stresses of the modern day disappear. We renovated the kitchen to include double doors to a split-level patio, which is a fantastic sun trap and a place to unwind after a busy day. From there is the landscaped area with a rockery that leads onto the lawns, with mature trees that wrap around the house. There are lots of little areas where you can sit under trees and enjoy the company of a good book."

From the moment you walk up the garden path towards the front of this house you feel like you're stepping into a magical setting; you open the door to a large entrance hall similar to what you would expect in a grand estate. Each door draws you into another area of this home, with stunning features bursting out at you, from the uneven walls to the deep, never-ending windowsills. The fireplaces can't help but be a feature, with their dominant presence, and even the ceilings command attention.

You can't help but appreciate the craftsmanship that has gone into bringing this home back to life, but as the owner says, "we've finished it… but not quite". She goes on to tell me that although this has been a treasured home for them, there are plenty of ways you can put your stamp on it to make it your own. There is one unfinished project that still niggles, and that is to restore the original thatched roof, which had long gone when they purchased the property - maybe that's a project for you?

She goes on to tell me, "It was never our goal to move quickly onto another property, which is why we paid such attention to getting things right. Even the oak wardrobes took two weeks to put in because, as we all know with old homes, nothing is straight. It's difficult to choose my favourite part of the property because I love every tiny feature and the abundance of character, but the new upstairs landing is a lovely space, the dual aspect makes it light and bright."

The village
"One of the best things about Blagdon is that it is so diverse and there is a lot of direct employment. The village club is a popular location for families; the kids can walk to the park safely; there are a couple of lovely pubs that serve great food; and many, many walks. It's a really popular area for walkers and cyclists, and in the summer my children have been known to make homemade lemonade and put a stall outside for those passing.

The location is wonderful for commuting as we are so central, in 20 minutes you can be in Bristol, which is thriving at the moment. In 35 minutes you're in the heritage city of Bath, but in 10 minutes you can arrive at Bristol Airport, which opens up many possibilities. Although the airport is close, we are not on the flight path, which is a major advantage."

Why move?
Like many people who love their homes, if they could pick this property up and move it somewhere they would. Their family's needs have changed, and now they are looking for a home with land, to support their children's hobbies.

They even had a long-term vision of turning the property into a B&B when the children had left home, and serving cream teas in the garden during the summer.

And so to the next chapter
This home has seen many owners over the last 440 years; it has kept families safe, brought joy, and given the warmest of welcomes. Should you wish to be its next custodian and protect it for future generations to cherish, whilst making it your home, then the door is open. We know that with each step you take up the path you will have already decided that your search is over, because this property has to be yours.
