The Cedar House

Reminiscent of the gorgeous beach house on Long Island owned by Diane Keaton's character in the film “Something's Gotta Give”, The Cedar House was built over two years and finished in 2016 in a style common to beach houses in the Hamptons. The house is clad in Canadian cedar under a powder-coated steel roof with deep eaves and faces south with large windows and vaulted ceilings. The hall, reception areas and kitchen are all laid out in a clever, open plan that manages to make each area feel quite distinct and “separate” whilst preserving the overall feeling of space. The build standard is exceptional with every care taken with the design of the interior to ensure that the house is very thermally efficient. Of special note is the wonderful feeling of light throughout the house.

The ground floor is dominated by the central drawing room area which is overlooked by the galleried landing and has a vaulted ceiling, open fireplace and three French windows to the terrace and garden. Off to one side are the dining and snug areas with the kitchen between them.
The kitchen like the rest of the house is light and airy with windows on two sides and is fitted with bespoke painted timber units including a central island and a large larder cupboard, granite work surfaces, a range of electric appliances including a 4-ring induction hob and a double Belfast sink. On the other side of the hall is the master bedroom suite which has lovely, south-facing views across the garden, large, walk-in wardrobe and en suite bathroom with separate shower. Adjacent are a wet room and a further panelled double bedroom that could serve as a separate, formal dining room if required. On the first floor off the suspended and galleried landing are a good-sized linen room and two further en suite double bedrooms, both with vaulted, tongue and groove boarded ceilings.

The Cedar House is approached down a no-through farm road to a gravelled parking area with space for several vehicles. Beside it is a cedar-clad, timber built double garage block with integral workshop area and a studio above with potential for use as a self-contained annex. To its rear are a timber greenhouse and four raised vegetable beds. The main house sits within a private and level garden with a good-sized central lawn fringed with stands of silver birch and a wide variety of attractive broadleaf trees including a variety of maples and a magnificent Northern red oak. On one side of the house with access through to the kitchen is a paved courtyard garden bound by tall close-board fencing that provides an idyllic sheltered outside dining area. Extending out from the south-facing side of the house is a deep, paved terrace fringed with lavender and with a dining area covered by a verandah. At the far end of the lawn is a bank planted with purple top vervain and a wide variety of ornamental grasses. Behind the bank is a selection of apple and pear trees and a gated entrance onto the village lane. In all about 1.6 acres (0.65 hectare).

The Cedar House is situated off a no-through road on the edge of the tiny village of Stowell which is surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside. Local facilities are close by in the larger neighbouring village of Charlton Horethorne (1.6 miles) which has a village shop/post office and The Kings Arms gastro pub.
There are regular rail services from nearby Templecombe (2.8 miles) to Waterloo (2.25 hours). For wider requirements the Abbey town of Sherborne (5.5miles) has both Waitrose & Sainsburys supermarkets and a thriving selection of independent retailers making it a popular shopping destination.
