The land is classified as Grade 3 on the Ministry of Agriculture Land Classification Series, whilst the Soil Survey of England and Wales describes the soils as being of the Newmarket 2 series, characterised by shallow, well drained, calcareous sandy and coarse loamy soils over chalk or chalk rubble.

The land is regarded as being suitable for cropping of cereal crops as well as some sugar beet and carrots.
