Vendors' Interview

“Originally called Pwll Green, Barn Owls is a very special property,” says the current owner of this stunning barn conversion. “One evening about 15 years ago, when it was still a run down barn, I walked into the building and there, on a rafter, was a large and magnificent Barn Owl. It didn't fly off, it just eyed me carefully until I left! At the time, I lived nearby in Pwll Cottage and to avoid confusion, I decided to change the name to Barn Owls in recognition of that wonderful bird.”

Resplendent with history and charm, the old barn has been exquisitely renovated by the owner into the fantastic property it is today. “Barn Owls is believed to date from the 1700s and was last occupied in the 1900s, so there was a lot of work to be done,” says the owner. “The redevelopment of Barn Owls started in 2012 but was put on hold until 2020, when permission was granted to extend the property by adding the living room, and the full redevelopment began. Barn Owls now has three bedrooms including one with an en suite bathroom and built-in wardrobe, and another with French doors and a patio; a family bathroom; and an entrance lobby. The large light and airy open plan kitchen, dining, and living area is the heart of the house, perfect for everyday life and entertaining alike. The whole house has a solid engineered wood floor with underfloor heating, provided by a combi oil boiler. Water is from the new mains supply and sewage is handled via a new 6 person package treatment plant. In addition, there is a bore hole in the first paddock which could supply water to the house, or to the grounds or horses.”

“Barn Owls sits within approximately nine acres of non-certified organic land,” continues the owner, “being a mixture of wild flower and grass meadow, wild gorse, wild flowers, scrub and woodland.
It is totally private, unique and full of investment potential for a whole variety of uses including equestrian, glamping, bespoke organic horticulture, or simply as a wonderful calm oasis for a family to enjoy. There is no better place for children to grow up, roaming and exploring the land, or camping in the woodland copse with campfire dinners and toasted marshmallows! The sun rises to the front of the property and sets to the rear, directly at the end of the land that is part of Barn Owls. The sunrises and sunsets are simply incredible, while at night, the clear starry skies are the most beautiful I have ever seen. The wildlife is fantastic here, too, with Buzzards, Red Kites, Owls, Woodpeckers, Cuckoos, Foxes, Badgers, and Rabbits, to name a few. The flora, especially the Bluebells and Foxgloves in spring, are also a sight to behold, carpeting two of the three paddocks.”

The location of the property has much to offer in terms of both calm and convenience. “I have lived in the two properties that neighbour Barn Owls,” says the owner, “all three accessed down a private lane. Barn Owls is about two thirds of a mile from the nearest road, a quiet B-road that links the seaside villages of Pendine and Amroth. Even in the peak of summer when the area is full with holiday makers and all of the seaside towns are rammed with cars, you wouldn't know it as you turn down that private lane; it's just peace, tranquillity and privacy. When we lived at Honey Cottage, which is Barn Owl's nearest neighbour, being about 200 metres away, we called it the 'half hour house' and the same goes for Barn Owls. It is such a great location, only half an hour from Tenby, from Narberth and from Carmarthen. We once swam in the sea at Amroth, which is under 10 minutes away from Barn Owls, at about 05.30 one summer morning, and at 11.30 that same morning we stepped off a train at Paddington in central London and were having lunch in London by 12pm. It really brings home how removed but how close you are to city life.”
