A beautiful period home with about 32 acres

Description

Bushwood is a beautifully presented, former woodman’s cottage, believed to date back to the reign of George the third. The brick and timber framed house has been sympathetically renovated by the current owners, with a superb brick and flint barn added to create a spacious drawing room with principal bedroom suite above. There are restored light oak timbers throughout, oak floors, oak windows, oak paneling and open log fires.

The house opens onto a light entrance hall leading into a quadruple aspect sitting room which looks out onto the garden and the rolling Chiltern Hills beyond. From this room there is a light, triple aspect kitchen/breakfast room, enjoying far-reaching views of the surrounding countryside. The kitchen is well equipped with cream wall and floor units, polished granite work surfaces, Villeroy & Boch triple ceramic sink, Lacanche range cooker, integrated Miele larder fridge and a walk in pantry. There is an impressive triple aspect drawing room, with delightful high ceilings, a brick inglenook fireplace and two sets of French windows which allow access onto the terraces. The ground floor also has two charming studys, a cozy snug and a dining room with an oak floor and traditional open fireplace.

On the first floor there is a magnificent principal bedroom with an en suite bathroom and dressing room, featuring vaulted ceilings, mellow oak exposed beams and a double aspect overlooking the garden, hills and fields. There are 2 further bedrooms, a dressing room/bedroom, a shower room, and an en suite bathroom. The property includes a cellar, providing valuable storage space along with a wine vault.

Outside

Bushwood is approached from the lane via a 5-bar gate leading to the gravel drive, large parking area and double garage with wood store. Attached to the garage is separate annex with a bedroom, shower room and a living room, which features high ceilings, an abundance of natural light and views of the garden and hills beyond.

The delightful gardens, of about 1.75 acres, are well established and surround the property with high hedges providing privacy and seclusion. There are a number of mature trees including walnut, holly, chestnut, apple, conifer and a fine copper beech. Well stocked perennial flower beds edge the garden and there is a landscaped pond to one side. There is also a luxurious Summer House in the garden which enjoys central heating and WIFI.

To the rear of the property lies a substantial area of lawn with a gate leading to the lane. The mixed woodland comprises oak, yew, beech and birch trees and amounts to approximately 30 acres.

Location

Bushwood is nestled on the edge of Beech woodland halfway between the charming Chilterns’ villages of Stoke Row and Highmoor, a designated area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The villages are surrounded by woodland and farmland and have many beautiful walks nearby. There is a local shop and post office, popular public house as well as the well-known restaurant, The Crooked Billet. More extensive shopping and recreational facilities can be found in nearby Reading and Henley-on-Thames together with a fast rail service to London Paddington (from 35 minutes) and access to the M4 and M40 motorways and Heathrow Airport.

There is a large choice of schools nearby both private and state, with a number of well-known public schools within easy reach. Stoke Row has a local C.E. Primary School and Oxford and Abingdon present a selection of highly regarded day schools including The Oratory, Cranford House Girls School, Moulsford Prep and Bradfield and Pangbourne College. Bushwood is also within the catchment of Reading Grammar School.
