This property is a delightful and elegant Grade II Listed Georgian country house, built around 1720 but with origins that date back to the 15th and 16th century, with a building on the site even mentioned in the 11th century Doomsday Book. It nestles in the midst of 4.03 acres of stunning landscaped grounds and woodland in the charming hamlet of Elmstone, not far from the villages of Wingham, Ickham and Preston. Beautifully restored by the current owners, the house, outbuildings and grounds still offer plenty of potential opportunities for new occupants. While the grand curved entrance and long driveway to the house is the way to approach this property by car, to appreciate the full impact of this stunning residence you need to walk along the country lane and through the wrought iron swing gate and brick pathway leading to the original front door. Here you can revel in the delights of the Monet-inspired bridge over part of the historical moat and take in the lovely external features of the house including high chimney stakes, mellow brickwork and Georgian sash windows. There are a number of entrances to the house and, once inside, you can really feel the warm ambience and enjoy the understated classical features that abound throughout the property including high ceilings, curved and flat multi-pane sash windows, panelled doors, numerous fireplaces, high skirtings and original shutters. There is a large and welcoming hall with antique wood flooring and shelving as well as a tranquil music room with an ornate, neo-classical fireplace, half height panelling on the walls, built-in book shelving units, an exposed beam and a full height sash window that, when open, enables you to walk outside. For sheer elegance you cannot beat the truly delightful sitting room with its bay window and large, curved glass windows as well as the attractive fireplace and real fire. The charming dining room with its herringbone parquet flooring, walk in tiled larder and inglenook with a log burner is ideal for those more formal suppers and family get togethers.

What the Owner says:

We bought this property some nine years ago because we loved the house, the surroundings and its peace and tranquillity, not to mention the wonderful countryside where we walk our dog. During out time here, we have thoroughly enjoyed bringing the grounds back to their former glory. It has been a perfect family home and a wonderful place for entertaining and garden parties - we even hosted our wedding here! Much as we love life at this property and feel privileged to be a part of its history, we feel it is now time for us to downsize and hand the baton over to another family who will equally fall in love with everything it has to offer. The local community is very friendly and the nearby villages of Preston and Wingham include local pubs, village stores, a butcher's shop, bakery, garden centre and farm shops as well as a livery yard and two good primary schools. You can enjoy great food at The Dog at Wingham and the Duke William pub at Ickham as well as live music at The Anchor. At the same time, the historic city of Canterbury with its high street and individual shops, theatres, bars and restaurants is only a 20 minute drive away and the medieval Cinque port town of Sandwich with its championship golf courses and shops, closer still. The Thanet Way is a stone's throw away for trips to London and to the Thanet towns with their quiet stretches of sandy beaches and the Turner Contemporary art gallery.
