Sandford Mount

Sandford Mount is an impressive and well-known house lying to the edge of the extremely popular town of Charlbury. It was built in c1890, originally as an extension and rebuild to a pre-existing property. Acquired in 1919 by the Bartlett family, it has been in the family's ownership ever since. Originally the house was the home for Christopher Bartlett, the first commercial frame-hive beekeeper in the country. At one point the family was producing 40 tons of honey a year, it all being extracted and bottled in the Honey Room on the lower ground floor.

In 1960 the house was sympathetically converted into apartments by his granddaughter, Penelope, and her architect husband, Peter Burchett. The alterations were undertaken in such a way as to retain many of the original features and was designed to allow for a straightforward conversion back into a country house. This is easily reversible as the main reception and bedroom areas are untouched and retain many of the existing doors and features. Since then Sandford Mount has been both the family home, as well as being run as a successful business.

The house has two driveways, one serving the main house and the other serving the Coach House and grounds. The house is approached via an elegant gravelled driveway with double doors leading to a grand reception hall. The hallway and principal reception rooms are all of generous sizes. The setting is beautiful, with open fields to the rear owned by the house and the original garden, including a Victorian water garden with a pond, bridge and grotto.

The coach house, known as The Martin's, is approached off the secondary drive with parking to the front. The accommodation is over two floors, with a three bedroom apartment to the first floor, with various stores, a saddle room, garaging and stabling to the ground floor. The garages in the coach house have a full working inspection pit together with a large tallet . There are a further set of garages beyond the Coach house as well as the “Red Shed” a useful storage barn suitable for a variety of uses. Bell's House: adjoining the Coach House is a small two-storey building with WC.

Charlbury is a popular market town in Oxfordshire. Surrounded by beautiful countryside and within easy striking distance of Oxford, it is a highly sought-after destination. The town itself is a thriving community, including a mainline railway station, several artisan shops, a Co-Op, Supermarket and doctors, vet and dentist surgeries. Nearby are the larger towns of Witney and Chipping Norton, offering comprehensive shopping facilities, including a Waitrose in Witney. The city of Oxford is also within half an hour, providing all the facilities one would expect from an international city.
