A beautifully situated parcel of ancient, semi-natural woodland, extending to approximately 7 acres. Situated in a rural but accessible location, ideal for conservationists and designated as part of a site of special scientific interest with direct road frontage.
General Remarks - Instructions have been received to offer this interesting parcel of ancient and protected woodland for sale by private treaty. Pentre Wood extends to approximately 7 acres and is a good example of lowland mixed broadleaf woodland which supports some uncommon species of flora. The type of woodland represented here is not common in Wales but has affinities with similar woods that are more typical of parts of the English Midlands.
Ancient semi-natural woodlands (native woods that have always been woodland or have been so since 1600) like Pentre Wood are especially important for nature conservation. The extent of these woodlands in Britain has over time been greatly reduced through softwood re-afforestation, clearances for agriculture and, to a lesser degree development, so that those areas remaining are of particular importance.
Sssi Status - This 7 acre section being offered for sale is part of the larger Pentre Wood and is designated a site of special scientific interest overseen by Natural Resources Wales.
The site is a good example of Ash/ Wych Elm woodland with abundant hybrid Oak and widely distributed Field Maple and Sycamore. There is a good mixture of tree ages and a well developed shrub layer of Hazel, Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Elder and dense Bramble thickets. The locally diverse ground layer consists of plants typical of rich woodland soils including Dog's Mercury, Ground Ivy, Yellow Archangel, Sweet Woodruff and Herb Robert. Some plants uncommon in this area of Powys such as Meadow Saffron, Small Teasel and Wood Millet can be found here in Pentre Wood, while the wetter areas nearer the stream support species such as Meadowsweet, Sanicle and Tufted Hair Grass. Opposite- leaved Golden Saxifrage also occurs. Bluebells are an additional feature in Springtime.
Pentre Wood with it's varied structure of young, mature, ageing and fallen trees, provides an important habitat for wildlife recognised by Natural Resources Wales and promoted through natural regeneration and sympathetic management. ( NRW have advised that they are able to provide additional information to any prospective purchaser via their designated officer ).
Location - The wood is located midway between Bishops Castle and Montgomery and fronts the B4385. Approaching East to West, it is the last section of woodland on the left hand side before reaching the hamlet of Pentre.
Viewing - At any reasonable time. * Please note there are no internal fences and the ground is uneven.
Notice - The wood is road fronting but there is no gateway or parking area. Viewers should display caution when inspecting the wood.
Due to its status as an SSSI it is highly unlikely that any commercial development would be granted.
