Hamlyn House was rebuilt in 1850 with the works being planned and directed by the renowned Victorian architect, John Hayward. Hamlyn House is one of only three secular properties completed by John Hayward who also built the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter and Blundells School to name a few. Hamlyn House underwent an extraordinary restoration project from 2007 to 2017 which has been completed to an impressive high specification. The east wing of the property
was completely rebuilt and the house has been completely rewired and replumbed. Twenty three chimneys made of high strength clay have been constructed and relined and the property has been reroofed with natural slate. Almost all of the ground floor windows have been replaced and a new porch has been rebuilt. The works were completed in 2017 and since then Hamlyn House has been ran as a highly regarded luxury hotel and more recently a very successful wedding venue, winning awards for both.
The property is reached by a private paved driveway and Grade II Listed stone pillars line the parking area which has space for up to eighteen cars. Hamlyn House comprises of four levels of spacious and light filled accommodation with high ceilings and sublime countryside views. The ground floor has four reception rooms including a bar and reception/office area. The morning room and dining room are south west facing and look out onto the spectacular scenery. The exquisite glasshouse currently used as a dining area and ballroom has also been designed to take advantage of these far reaching views and offers a very special entertaining space. The west wing of the ground floor serves as the areas for the practical needs of the hotel, with a large commercial kitchen, staff areas and store rooms and an enclosed courtyard. There is lift access from this floor to the first and second floor accommodation.
Five beautifully appointed ensuite bedrooms make up the first floor along with a spacious self-contained apartment complete with a living room and kitchen. The second floor comprises a further four large ensuite bedrooms. All of these bedrooms have been finished to an exceptional standard, with modern facilities and underfloor heating.
