Historic terraced house in prime, central location

Description

The Old Seabox, 126 North Street, is a former fisherman’s house which is believed to originate from the sixteenth century and to contain stone from the ruined cathedral. It was remodelled in the 1700s and extended into its present form in the 1980s.

The house belonged to The Seafaring Society which was founded in 1643 . The membership comprised masters, mates and mariners who paid dues as a proportion of their earnings. The society also derived income from property and investment funds. The society supported members who were prevented from working by illness or disability, those over 55 and their widows and children. Alternative names for the society included the Sea Poor Box of St Andrews (1734), the Sea Box Society of St Andrews (1863), the Poor Sea Box Society of St Andrews (1880). The Society ceased to be registered in 1920 and the last meeting was held in January 1921.

The present owners bought the house in the early 2000s and carried out a full renovation at that time. It is a charming property which retains many period features such as exposed stone walls, wooden floors and working window shutters. Original, cut stones from the cathedral can be clearly seen.

The front door leads to a hall with a deep under stairs cupboard. The two reception rooms sit either side and have exposed stone walls and fireplaces one with a solid fuel stoves. The sitting room opens into the sun room and the dining room into the kitchen.

The kitchen has marble topped wooden units and the appliances comprise a Neff oven and hob, integrated fridge, Stoves dishwasher and washing machine. The adjoining sun room has a tiled floor, bay window and French doors to a paved terrace outside. There is a shower room off.

The two bedrooms on the first floor both have built in cupboards and windows to the front and rear. They are served by a bathroom with bath with shower over, WC and washbasin.

The two bedrooms on the second floor have coombed ceilings with a low ceiling hight and dormer windows. There is a deep linen cupboard and boiler cupboard off the landing.

Garden
The Old Seabox has a long, south facing garden which is fully walled on both sides. There is a sheltered, paved terrace outside the sun room. Steps lead up to a lawn with paved paths, a barbeque area and shrub beds around. There is a paved mid-section with a sundial and trellis fencing. Behind is a wooded area with a garden shed and raised playhouse.
