There is vehicular access (marked black dots) through an agricultural access gate and stoned track at the edge of the village of Boughrood to the Island Run, Rock and Tail of Rock Pool and there is pedestrian access also from there as shown (marked green dots) to the remainder of the fishery principally from the true left bank looking downstream.
There is car parking both sides of the B4350 in Boughrood near the fishing hut by the Mill Race and Mill Stream. Please do not park on the hardstanding in front of the garages or near the field entrance as shown on the Beat map. Do not obstruct any access points. Access is also via any public rights of way eg Wye Valley Walk (please close gates).
Situation - A delightful and well known Upper Wye salmon, trout and coarse fishery. Brecon 13 miles, Hay-on-Wye 8 miles, Hereford 30 miles.
The Fishery lies in the heart of the Upper Wye Valley some 13 miles downstream from Builth Wells and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and on a River of Special Scientific Interest. The countryside is magnificent comprising mixed grassland farms, woodland hillsides and in places bordered by attractive mostly oak riverside woodland some of which is included in this sale.
There is a fishing hut located on the left bank of the B4350 between Mill Stream and Neck of Rectory, east of the village of Boughrood.
The Fishery - One of the most renowned and famous salmon, trout and coarse fisheries on the Upper River Wye with good holding pools and ideal for salmon fly fishing. It was fished for many years by the Late Dr Stephen Marsh Smith, a former Director and Founder of the Wye Usk Foundation at Hay-on-Wye and well known for his work in endeavouring to preserve and enhance Atlantic Salmon in the River Wye system.
We are indebted to Simon Evans and Wye Usk Foundation for their assistance in preparing these particulars, copyright of the Beat map and supporting information. WUF have in the past and would, in the future, form a contract with the Purchaser on the passport scheme should they wish to let season or day rods. Please, if you are not already a member, support and join the Wye Usk Foundation. Single hook F-Cs only
Fly fishing only for trout and grayling
Trotting for grayling allowed between 18 October 14 March. Maximum 2 grayling / trout per rod per day
WUF coarse fishing rules apply
Dogs must be kept under control
Coarse fishing barbel and chub offer good fishing opportunities although the fishery is principally salmon, trout and grayling. There is also a good head of dace
Wading is reasonably easy for most of the beat but note there are rock outcrops to negotiate to access some of the lower pools and studded soles on fishing waders are essential
Fishery Records - A record of salmon catches in the past six seasons excluding 2022:
2021 23 salmon 2020 15 salmon
2019 22 salmon 2018 13 salmon
2017 62 salmon 2016 63 salmon
A six yearly average of 33 salmon. Average weights +12lb, best 28lb.
The beat fishes best during wet Springs and Summers like 2012, 2016 and 2017 when salmon run up from the lower river and pause at The Rectory.
Salmon Pool Notes - The height reference is to the Upper Wye Llanstephan webcam gauge approximately 3 miles upstream:
The beat offers good fishable heights from 9 2'11. The upper half of the beat is better in high flows and the lower fishes at mid to lower flows.
At the top the Wye runs round a river to form the Island run which is excellent fly water and fish can be caught anywhere in the run. There are well polished lumps of slate which should be waded around rather than over. The island run then feeds into the:
Rock Pool Top and Tail
This is the most productive pool and excellent fly water. The best catches are level with and just below the big rock and below the overhanding Ash tree at the tail. It is a deep and challenging wade in places especially in higher flows. It can also be fished with spinner from the bank.
Above the bridge the river widens and shallows, providing excellent trout and grayling fishing and may hold a salmon in high water. Below the bridge you have the:
Bridge Pool
A productive pool high water salmon pool With catches below the bridge and half way down the run and around the 2 stones. In High water it is worth fishing past the wires.
The river then widens and shallows until it approaches Ty Mawr Pool which is a deep holding corner pool suitable for spinner. It fishes best when the water is over 2'2 and often produces the first fish of the season. Next you have the.
The Gravel Catch
The tail of Ty Mawr and a good high water salmon catch that suits a long cast. It is best when salmon are running and suits both fly and spinner.
A further 500m of shallow fast water follows that is good trout water before the river funnels under the left bank into a short attractive fly run called the New Catch. In recent years the odd fish has been caught here at lower heights of around 1ft. The river then tumbles over some rock ledges into the:
Mill Stream
One of the best low water catches on the beat. Fish from the spine of rock with a short line the Middle and Tail is less productive for salmon but excellent coarse and trout water. The far bank slack is noted for producing big pike.
Below is:
Rectory Stream and Neck of Rectory
Get onto the island to fish this lovely fly stream. An excellent medium and low water catch from 1'6 down to 6. Salmon can be almost anywhere with the hotspot as the water rounds the rock ledge
Rectory Pool
The run along the bank produces fish to spinner and weighted fly, the middle and tail fish well in the spring especially near the overhead wires with a spinner. This leads down to the Rectory Pot Which produces the odd fish at 2' and 1'3 towards the back end of the season.
The wide shallow flow below runs into the left bank to form:
The Run
Mainly fished from the true left bank wading close to the bank or off the bank itself. Best at 1'6. The intrepid can wade across above and fish from the right bank. Another long flat section where the current gathers the beat ends.
Catch figures indicate approximately. 90% of salmon caught from fly and 10% by spinner.
Coarse Fishing
The fishery has an existing arrangement to host weekend coarse fishing matches for local clubs in the winter.
There is a good head of chub, grayling and dace and shoals of barbel that live in the beat.
There are also some very large pike which are occasionally caught.
