A spacious and well presented Grade II listed country house, set in glorious gardens and grounds
Description
Nether Walstead is a substantial Grade II listed country home and is a fine example of a period house, set on the rural outskirts of Lindfield. Believed to date from the 17th century, the original portion of the house is over two storeys, the attic space now used as additional bedroom space, with two sets of dormers and three bays. This part of the house is fronted with weather-boarding and stands on a red brick base. The rear elevation is of red brick with a narrow gabled projection of three storeys.
Additions were made to the house in the 19th and 20th centuries to the west and an L-wing to the north, clad in weather-boarding on red brick plinths or red brick to the ground floor. The windows throughout the house are casements.
There is a massive brick chimney breast at the east end, and subsidiary chimneys to the western end of the original portion as well as two additional chimneys in the 19th and 20th century portions. The whole is under a tiled roof.
The gardens are a particular feature of Nether Walstead from the south facing terrace to the rear of the house to the formal lawns and paths with well stocked borders surrounding. Beyond, the garden becomes less formal with mature rhododendrons and a spinney. Within the gardens are stables and a well screened swimming pool and tennis court.
In all about 8 acres
Agent’s Note: A detached three bedroom cottage with useful period barn, part walled garden and lawns, together with a further paddock of about 3 acres is also available by separate negotiation.
Location
Situated in a glorious semi-rural position, on the outskirts of the popular and thriving village of Lindfield and just 2.5 miles from Haywards Heath mainline rail station. Lindfield High Street is approximately 1.2 miles walking distance via public footpaths, and offers a good range of boutiques, a butcher, a baker, a delicatessen, a small supermarket and a range of restaurants and pubs, with further amenities in neighbouring Haywards Heath.
There are many leisure activities available locally, including local clubs for football, rugby, cricket and theatre; across Sussex, activities include show jumping at Hickstead, sailing at Ardingly and golf at one of the many courses across the county. Spa and country house hotels include Ockenden Manor, Alexander House, Ashdown Park, Gravetye Manor and South Lodge.
Sussex offers a vibrant cultural scene, with world-class opera at Glyndebourne, theatre at Royal Tunbridge Wells and the historic County town of Lewes, and the annual Brighton Festival presenting a huge programme of theatre, dance, classical music and literary events.
Transport: Haywards Heath offers fast and frequent services to London Bridge, London Victoria and St Pancras International (from 42 minutes). The A23 is to the west of Haywards Heath, linking to the motorway network, Gatwick and Heathrow airports and the coast.
