Dating from about 1720, The Mill House is a charming and beautifully presented, Grade II listed property comprising a converted water mill on three floors and attached, two-storey house, which are built as a single range in stone with the house covered with colour-washed render. Identified as Cloton Mill in Thomas Hardy's short story “Destiny and a Blue Cloak” of 1874, the mill has been imaginatively incorporated into the main house to enable it to be used as one single dwelling or with a very generous, self-contained annexe on three floors. Currently the mill offers a very high quality, self-catering holiday let (). The house is typical of the early to mid-Georgian period and is essentially one room thick with windows on two sides allowing natural light to flood into the interior and with a gorgeous and private outlook over the mill pond, garden and wooded grounds.
The ground floor comprises two good-sized reception rooms either side of the central reception hall/study. All three rooms have fireplaces fitted with wood-burning stoves. The kitchen/dining room is adjacent to the snug, is fully fitted with units and a range of electric appliances and has ample space for dining. A further door from the kitchen leads through to a later Georgian extension with flagged rear hall, laundry room and cloakroom.
On the first floor of the main house are the principal bedroom with walk-through dressing room and en suite shower room, three further double bedrooms, bathroom and shower room with a further double bedroom and storage room in the attic. The attached mill/annexe is fully accessible from the house and comprises a living/dining room, kitchen and cloakroom/laundry room on the ground floor and a first-floor landing leading to the sitting room and the principal bedroom suite (currently utilised as part of the annexe). On the upper floor of the mill is the magnificent library/home office, which also double as a gym.
The Mill House nestles beside the narrow River Brit with water flowing off into the original upper and lower leats, which flow beside the mill with a mill pond behind. The setting is very private and sheltered with an outlook towards the hillside opposite and the village church. This natural setting is complemented by a series of interlinking formal gardens comprising a lovely walled garden containing a series of terraces and amounting to about a half acre. Beyond are the orchard, leat garden and streamside walks incorporating bridges across the river and through the surrounding arboreta, containing a wonderful array of trees including a range of magnolias flowering over a 6-month season. The house is approached by a sloping tarmac drive to a parking area with space for several cars. Beside it is a stone cart house that is capable of garaging four cars with ample additional storage space including a mezzanine floor and offers further potential subject to consent. Attached to the mill is a lean-to turbine room positioned over the leat and close by is a further beautiful walled garden with terraced fountain and ponds. In all about 6.65 acres (2.69 hectares) and currently part of the National Gardens Scheme (see ).
