Important Ancient Iron Age hillfort later occupied by the Romans
Description
Located just 4 miles from Honiton within the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Hembury Fort is spectacularly situated on a south facing heathland promontory at the southern end of a 240m high ridge. The land which in all extends to around 38.81 acres includes the scheduled monument known as Hembury Fort, a small multivallate hillfort of Iron Age date, occupying the site of an earlier Neolithic causewayed enclosure. The Fort was later occupied by the Roman Army in the middle of the 1st century AD. Today the Fort survives in exceptionally good condition with a well-defined circuit of defences and is valuable archeologically for the information it provides relating to the lives, economy and landscape of the Neolithic and Iron Age people who lived and used the site as well as information in respect of its later Roman military occupation. From the open heathland ridge mature woodland slopes away steeply on the eastern and western flanks providing fascinating woodland walks and a diverse habitat for interesting flora and fauna.
Acreage: 38.81 Acres
Directions
From Honiton, take the A373 towards Cullompton. Continue on the road for 4 miles passing through the village of Awlisombe and at the top long hill turn right at Hembury Cross. Hembury Fort will be found on your right hand side.
