Spinnakers is a delightful family house set in its own grounds, designed in 1922 by Percy Morley-Horder, a contemporary of Lutyens and a noted architect. The house is built on a 16’ span with good ceiling heights throughout. It has traditional Kentish ragstone walls with brick quoins and oak weatherboarding over brick walls to the upper elevations with square leaded light windows all under a hand-made Keymer tile roof with a dovecote attached to the western elevation.
Internally oak timbers and beams are reputed to be from the Temeraire warship made famous in Turner’s painting, and broken up at Chatham in the early years of the 20th Century and there is a magnificent Tudor fireplace in the drawing room with stone surround and oak bressumer beam reclaimed from the “Three Tuns” Inn, in Maidstone demolished at about the time the house was built, with a copper hood. Principal internal doors are panelled in oak with sliding wrought iron latches. There are oak sills and five magnificent oak arches in the reception hall and staircase.
The house offers good large principal rooms, mostly double aspect, with views over its own land from every window. The sitting room has a ragstone fireplace with stone hearth and the study has fitted cupboards and a fitted desk. The dining room features a built in cupboard with shelves and a separate shelving unit.
The triple aspect kitchen/breakfast room is a delightful room with a superb range of fitted limed oak and glazed wall and floor cabinets
with Fired Earth hand-made terracotta floor tiles. There is a four ring electric and halogen hob with extractor above and a ‘new dimension’ Gaggenau oven, dishwasher, washing machine and space for a fridge freezer. The kitchen opens to the rear lobby/boot room and onto the utility room with further space for a fridge, freezer and tumble dryer and housing for the Grant oil fired boiler.
The utility room was once the pantry and the original slate shelve remains. The cloakroom has been recently refitted with marble vanity unit and Tuscan marble floor tiles. The internal courtyard has a new gardeners WC and a covered loggia and doors to the rear lobby.
On the first floor is a magnificent double aspect master bedroom and dressing room which could be used as a fifth bedroom. Both have a good range of fitted wardrobes and views over the gardens and grounds.
There are a further three double bedrooms, two of which are double aspect and benefit from built in vanity units and all three have fitted wardrobes. The family bathroom features an original cast iron bath and verde crystal vanity unit with fitted linen cupboards and decorative beam.
To the rear of the house is a double glazed garden room which is currently used as a garden store/workshop.
