Seller Insight
Rurally located in the Cambridgeshire Fenland region between the villages of Ramsey Forty Foot and Benwick and set in 5.865 acres is Rosemary Cottage, the much-loved home and 34-year project of Ronald and Rosemary. ‘The original house was a 1950 Fen relic built on a loose brick base however it was it a terrible state of disrepair, so we pulled it down and had a bungalow built on more solid footings. We built it in reclaimed bricks from a Georgian warehouse demolished in Boston, Lincolnshire in order to add charm and colour and added a more traditional looking roof with modern pantiles to take the Fen storms.’ Following this an extension creating three new living rooms was added, and, more recently a deluxe conservatory has been constructed. Steeped in history, Rosemary Cottage stands on what was the very last of the old farm labourers allotment sites where parcels of land were given to Fen labourers who lived in dwellings scattered around the Fen. ‘When we saw the for sale sign go up all those years ago we knew we had to buy it – it’s been a labour of love which we’re very proud of.’
‘The views are exquisite, and we enjoy beautiful sunsets and large skies. The whole area teems with wildlife and accessible droves that lead throughout the Fens. Buzzards soar and a family of twelve Roe deer live in the adjacent copse. The peace and surrounding nature are incredible.’
‘Our nearest neighbours – six families – live in a group of houses about 200 yards away. The occupants of nearby farm tend our field to the highest standards. We’ve felt lucky to have such a happy little community nearby.’
‘The house is a delight and easy to keep warm; Victorian cast iron fireplaces alone warm most of the house. The garden, which bursts with flowers and is wonderful for entertaining, has given us huge pleasure. It has two small greenhouses for growing from seed; our pantry is always filled with homemade jams and preserves.’
‘Although rural we never feel cut off as the A1, M11 and A14 are all nearby. There are good local bus services and excellent train links. A good choice of schools can be found in Ramsey Abbey, Chatteris and March.’
‘We will miss the feeling of real home and country connection – from far-reaching winter views to summer days in the garden – and living in Cromwell country.’
