Chota Castle

Chota Castle is a magnificent family house which was built as a folly castle around 1850, with later extensions. The south elevation has castellated parapet detailing, stone mullion windows and wide stone arches, one leading to the entrance hall and the second onto a small inner cobbled courtyard.

The most attractive rear elevation has wide double bay windows, a central balcony with ornate iron work detailing in a Georgian design, supported by four stone pillars, partly adorned with a beautiful wisteria.

The present owners purchased Chota Castle in 2013 and undertook an intensive and detailed renovation programme redesigning the interior, landscaping the grounds and creating superb leisure facilities.

The interior is elegant and classic, creating a warm friendly atmosphere. It is Georgian in character with tall windows, an ornate ceiling cornice in the drawing room, archways, panelled doors and a sweeping staircase in the reception hall which leads to a semi-circular gallery landing.

All principal rooms have a wonderful view over its parkland setting and the countryside beyond. The bespoke kitchen/breakfast room is a lovely space to enjoy, with a four oven Aga, generous central island and French doors opening to the superb terrace, an ideal space for entertaining.

On the first floor, the principal bedroom opens on to the wide and deep balcony, together with an ensuite bathroom and dressing room. There are a further 4 double bedrooms.

The leisure wing includes an impressive media room, well-equipped gym, games room, changing room and sauna and can be accessed from the house or from the secondary entrance. The cottage, finished to the same high standard as the main house, has its own entrance and garden, however, can also be accessed from the house. The cellars with wine bins are extensive and have a good ceiling height. The attic rooms have potential to develop, subject to any planning consents.

The west facing cottage has twin porches and benefits from its own entrance and garden. It comprises a sitting room, dining room, open plan kitchen / breakfast room with integrated appliances, a log burning stove and a cloakroom on the ground floor. The first floor provides four well-presented bedrooms, two en suite bathrooms and family bathroom.

The gardens and grounds at Chota Castle have been thoughtfully designed with strategic planting, rockeries, topiary, herbaceous borders, and numerous seating areas. A variety of ancient trees include a mulberry and horse chestnut beside the drive, a magnificent cedar of Lebanon, Wellingtonia, oak and copper beech trees, across the front lawn creating its parkland setting.

Chota Castle is approached up a long drive with an apple orchard on the south side and a 90'steel frame barn with alternative access if needed. The north side of the drive is lined with established beech hedgerow and mature trees. There is generous parking close to the house, a detached oak framed double garage and store. The drive branches to the cottage, tennis court and Pentanque court. Beyond is a walled kitchen garden with espalier fruit trees, raised beds and a timber framed greenhouse. The kitchen garden opens to a walled outdoor kitchen and dining area with brick built pizza oven, mosaic style stone floor and planted borders. It is also accessible from the pool area, which has a stone paved surround and generous seating area.

A paved terrace spans the width of the rear of the house and has wide central steps leading down to the immaculate lawns, interspersed with the magnificent trees. There are stone edge beds, deep shaped borders, ornamental features such as a circular sunken fire pit with waterfall and pond, and a recently built tiled pergola with water feature. Stone steps from the ha-ha lead down to the fields.

The pasture land is divided into three fields. One lying to the north of the drive and two adjoining the ha-ha to the east which have frontage to the River Chew.
