Brigend is located on the edge of the village of Newton Wamphray in the north east of Dumfries and Galloway. The locality is between Moffat and Lockerbie and has good access to the A74(M), the direct route from Carlisle to Glasgow. A wide range of independent shops and services are located nearby in the attractive rural town of Moffat.

Lockerbie provides a wider range of services including a West Coast Main Line railway station.
Both towns offer primary and secondary level education. The village is on the route of a regular
bus service that runs between Moffat and Lockerbie.
The rural area is renowned for its picturesque rolling countryside whilst being comfortably commutable, south to Carlisle and north to both Edinburgh and Glasgow.

In 2010, the original house underwent a complete refurbishment with a new extension being added
to the rear. The attractive ‘B’ listed detached property was gutted and the upgrade commenced.
The project, undertaken with the integrity of the building in mind, provides a home that is full of
character and period detail whilst meeting modern day living standards. The refurbishment has
included upgrading the plumbing and insulation and the house has been re-wired and double glazing has been installed throughout. A stylish bathroom has been created on the first floor and the classic modern fittings include a luxurious roll top bath. The kitchen/breakfast room features an electric, three oven AGA, with a conventional AGA electric oven/grill module with gas hob. The units are handmade with an oak worktop and double Belfast sink.

The sitting room is a particularly fine feature. Previously used as a stable for the doctor’s pony, the room was incorporated into the main accommodation as an impressive reception room with south west facing French doors opening to the front of the house. A traditional cast iron hob grate with a sandstone surround is a lovely addition to the elegant room.

Part of the refurbishment included the addition of an extension to the rear. Within the extension is a double bedroom, bathroom, utility/boot room.

GARDEN AND GROUNDS
The garden at Brigend extends to about 0.4 acres. A mature hedge provides both privacy and shelter to the garden which is predominantly south and west facing. The mature garden includes a lawn with decorative shrubberies plus areas of less formal planting.

There is a hard parking area to the side and front of the house. Also included is a timber workshop/
garage as well as a timber storage shed.

Historical Note
Until the early 19th century, the house was called Craigfute. Sitting by the entrance to Wamphray Glen, it was a single story building occupied by a local cooper. When the nearby Wamphray Bridge
was built in 1800, Craigfute found itself on the main coach road between Glasgow and Carlisle. 20 years later, the coach road was realigned to follow the route of today’s A74(M), on the other side
of the valley. Now on a quiet backroad, and by this time known as Brigend, a second storey was added when it became home to the long serving parish doctor. Latterly, Brigend served as the home and office of the overseer of the Wamphray Estate.
