An historically important village house.

Description

Shakespeare House is an historically important property listed Grade II* and was formerly a 16th century coaching inn known as The Ship. According to legend, William Shakespeare stayed at the property on numerous occasions when travelling between Stratford Upon Avon and London and it is said that he gained inspiration for A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the property.

The property has been carefully and sympathetically restored and modernized by the current owners to create a wonderful and spacious family home. Much of the architectural detail has been preserved including leaded window lights, exposed beams, oak flooring, hardwood doors and open fireplaces. The property is mentioned in Pevsner’s “Buildings of England” and there was believed to have been a priest hole on the second floor.

The front door opens onto the reception hall with steps up to the most impressive drawing room, in the Elizabethan wing, which is triple aspect with high ceiling. The dining room is another imposing room with period paneling and inglenook fireplace. To the rear is the contemporary kitchen/breakfast room with the snug/family room off. The principal bedroom suite is reached off an oak Jacobean staircase and there are a further three bedrooms and two bathrooms on the first floor with another three bedrooms and two bathrooms on the top floor.

The property is approached via an “in and out” drive way with a separate drive providing access to the detached double garage with home office/studio over which is off the rear garden. Mature trees and shrubs to the front screens the property from the village and the large rear garden offers seclusion with lawns, terraces and a pond which is a wildlife haven.
