The Cottage

Unlisted and reputedly dating from 1650 with more recent extensions, The Cottage is constructed of green sand stone and weather boarded elevations under a slate roof. Recent additions have included the drawing room and the vaulted kitchen; at the time footings were put in creating the scope for further space and the possibility of linking with the newer part of the building. Other attributes worthy of particular mention include the outstanding view, quarry tile flooring, and open fireplaces. The modern barn could be put to a variety of different uses including ancillary accommodation subject to the usual consents.
The Cottage is approached from the lane through a timber gate onto a gravelled drive leading to the barn and beyond that to the loose boxes. The barn (circa 39.5 ft x 31.8 ft) has previously been used for the restoration of vintage cars, and is constructed of stone and timber cladding; it has a mezzanine level and an inspection pit. In addition there are two adjoining loose boxes with a feedstore and one separate loose box beyond the barn with an area of concrete hard standing. Close to the entrance there is a timber outbuilding comprising of workshop and further tack room. At the front of the cottage, which is set back from the lane there is a small green sand wall bordered on both sides by attractive flower and shrub borders. The majority of the garden is to the rear and is to grass.
The land is in four enclosures and is bordered by post and rail fencing and mixed hedging.
Cann is a small hamlet lying just to the south of Shaftesbury. Shaftesbury has an excellent range of facilities including a delicatessen, cafes, restaurants, niche retailers, a boutique hotel, banks, a small hospital, library, health centre and an arts centre. In nearby Gillingham there is a Waitrose as well as a mainline railway station (London Waterloo). A wider range of facilities can be found in Sherborne, Bath and Salisbury, all within easy motoring distance. The A303 lies some nine miles to the north giving access to the south-west and London, via the M3.
