An exceptional Grade II listed country house in
an idyllic Hampshire setting.

Description

The White House is an outstanding country house, offering a wonderful country lifestyle in a beautiful rural location. The house is listed Grade II and was once a pair of cottages, understood to date from the early 1800s. It has an interesting history, being one of the last remaining parts of Robert Owen’s Harmony Hall that once stood nearby. The house has been significantly extended and improved over the years, particularly during the current owners’ tenure and it now provides an idyllic family home.

The panelled front door opens under a pillared porch into a spacious reception hall with a parquet floor, attractive fireplace and staircase to the first floor. To the left a door opens through to a sitting room which provides an ante room to the superb drawing room beyond. Both rooms have beautiful working fireplaces and sash windows with charming window seats. Beyond the drawing room is a dining room with bay window and French doors. Both the drawing room and dining room enjoy a southerly aspect over the gardens. The kitchen breakfast room is found to the rear of the house, accessed via the dining room or the reception hall. It is an outstanding space with a beautiful hand-made kitchen, oil-fired four oven Aga and a superb walk in larder. Three sets of French doors open on to the adjoining west-facing terrace, there is a sitting area with a Jetmaster fireplace and a delightful dining area. The family room is ideally located for young children, opening directly from the kitchen. The ground floor is completed by a study, a boot room and utility room. There is also a cellar which houses the boiler.

On the first floor, a wide landing gives access to all the bedrooms. The principal bedroom is located over the south wing and has an adjoining dressing room which in turn leads through to a bathroom. There are two nearby bedrooms which are ideal for children and share the family bathroom. To the far side of the landing are two superb guest rooms each with an en suite bathroom.

GARDENS AND GROUNDS
The White House is approached via a discreet wrought-iron electric gate opening onto a gravel driveway. The driveway provides a wonderful approach, passing lawns and paddocks to a gravel parking area at the side of the house. The drive continues around the front of the property to access The Lodge and there is also a secondary driveway onto the lane. The gardens at The White House are delightful with a terrace, formal rose garden and croquet lawn located on the west side of the house, bordered by clipped Yew and Box hedges. To the south there are further lawns with deep herbaceous borders. A kitchen garden is located in a sheltered spot to the north-west of the house.

Behind the formal gardens, there is an area of woodland, following the boundary of the property and providing a charming woodland walk. At the end of the woodland, a tree house with terrace enjoys delightful far-reaching views over the surrounding countryside.

The balance of the land is laid to pasture and is found to the north and west of the house and gardens. The largest field is gently rolling, bordered by estate fencing and woodland to the perimeter. To the far west there are two level paddocks, one of which contains a field shelter. A further block of pasture is found across the lane and forms an orchard with a variety of fruit trees and a small area of woodland to the perimeter.

Lodge and Outbuildings
The Lodge provides a double garage and car port with a studio/annexe above. There is a WC on the ground floor with a kitchen and open-plan living room on the first floor. Plumbing is in place to create a shower room. Adjacent to the main parking area is the stable yard with three loose boxes and a tack room with WC. A further outbuilding is found close to the driveway entrance and currently provides workshops and garage storage.

Location

The White House sits in a delightful rural location, 1.5 miles to the south of the village of Broughton which has two public houses, a shop and a post office. The market town of Stockbridge is 6 miles away and is renowned for its fishing connections as well as boutique shops, restaurants and butcher. The cities of Winchester and Salisbury are both within easy reach and offer a full range of amenities and services. This part of Hampshire is renowned for its many highly regarded schools which include Farleigh, Godolphin, Winchester College, St Swithun’s and the Salisbury Grammar Schools.
