Description
The tree lined, private drive sweeps southwards, bisecting the land until it reaches Woodside and its wonderful lake. This unlisted, substantial, mid eighteenth century country house offers more than 12,000 square feet of accommodation currently divided in to the principal house and a secondary dwelling.

The principal reception rooms are magnificent with views across the lake or over the formal gardens. They have high ceilings and large picture windows, deep skirtings and ornate cornicing.

Although currently divided in to two dwellings, the house may be reunited with ease by the simple unlocking of doors rather than the removal of walls.

The gardens and grounds are a particularly notable feature of the property. The ornamental lake to the east of the house is magnificent and there is a very pleasant walk around it as the banks are full of specimen tree and shrubs. To the south of the house are more formal lawns and beds and beyond are protecting grass paddocks and spinneys. The paddocks are farmed with sheep grazing and haymaking and there are no footpaths across any of the land.

To the west of the house is a separate access to Down Lane and a range of useful buildings including a large garage with ancillary stores.

Additional Info

What is now Woodside stands on land owned by William Sleche in the mid fifteen hundreds. His name still features as “Sleeches Cross” which is a well-known local turning point on the Frant Road.

Woodside was built by George Minet in 1832 and was at that time called Delvideer. There subsequently followed a series of name changes as the Woodside property was split or reunited with land originally owned by Sleche.

The name Woodside finally triumphed and the house appears to have been so called because the land borders the “Great Wood”, part of the Abergavenny Estate. Woodside lake may have originally been created to supply energy for the bellows needed in the iron industry many centuries ago.

The house was last on the open market in 1931.
