Timbers

Timbers is a fascinating country house, set prominently in its grounds and steeped in history, originally built as a shooting lodge for the estate on the site of an old sawmill. The house itself is believed to date back to the 1920s and centres on a long hallway to the back of the house, from which the majority of the rooms lead, maximising the benefit from the property’s southerly aspect. The drawing room sits to the east of the ‘u-shape’ with windows to all three sides, exposed beams to the ceiling, wooden floors and a large open fireplace with brick surround. The spacious dining room is adjacent to the drawing room and in turn leads through to the kitchen and breakfast room. Timbers, along with the rest of Basildon Park, was requisitioned during WWII and US101 1st Airborne Division was billeted in huts in the grounds prior to the D-Day landings. The bases of some of these huts are still visible in the woodland area.
Timbers is situated in a spectacular position within the fabulous grounds of Basildon Park, a magnificent Palladian National Trust mansion set in rolling parkland on the edge of Lower Basildon. The pretty Thameside villages of Pangbourne and Goring are just 3 miles away and provide an excellent range of local shops and amenities, including a direct train service into London Paddington. The larger towns of Reading and Newbury provide a wider range of facilities and cater for most everyday needs.
