A beautiful country period family home, full of Arts and Crafts charm and situated in a delightful setting with views. Set in a plot of over an acre with a westerly aspect to the rear.

Description

Five Elms is a beautiful representation of the Arts and Crafts period. Built in 1905 it has been sympathetically restored and extended by its current owners, keeping the decorative and fine arts features combined with a modern family style living arrangement. The house is ideally positioned in approximately 1.15 acres of mature gardens and grounds with a south westerly aspect to the rear, and far reaching views to the front.

The main entrance and porch is abundant with hand crafted detail. The entrance hall is spacious, warm and inviting with original stained oak panelling, hard wood herringbone parquets floors, original stained glass windows and a delightfully large corner fireplace. The hall leads directly to the family sitting room (originally the dining room) which features a Tudor style arch and large south facing bay window. The study which is on the cool side of the house also has a bay window and French, stained glass doors, indicative of the period which lead to the north terrace. This links with a beautifully appointed formal drawing room.

The kitchen is truly the heart of the home with a triple aspect, extensive handmade cabinetry and a large black Aga and range. They cleverly introduced a grand conservatory dining area. The west facing room is ideal for entertaining with numerous points of access to the landscaped terrace and gardens. The inner hall leads to a large (tanked) cellar perfect for wine storage and household goods.

The principal bedroom is 7.8 by 4.8 meters with double south-west aspects. The en suite is classically designed in black and cream. The four other double bedrooms on the first floor are in each corner to the front of the house, two have original and distinct wrought iron and fired-tile fireplaces. They share a family bathroom and separate shower room. There are two further double bedrooms on the second floor, one en suite and a large easily accessed loft storage room.

Outside

The main entrance is off a small country lane called Pope’s Lane. A set of automated gate leads to a drive catering for multiple vehicles. A garage to the left of the site has a studio room above which would be perfect for creating a home working space. The front terrace runs seamlessly to the side of the house with brick, gravel and stone slab detail and beautifully landscaped beds and swathes laid to lawn. A long rectangular pond is visually compelling. The rest of the grounds have been excavated and terraced to give various levels and seating arrangements. To the top west garden is a site which was previously an orchard. The garden then turns into a paddock with another outbuilding which could be used as a studio or further entertaining space. In all it is about 1.15 acres with the rear having a southerly, westerly and northerly aspect.

Location

Five Elms is set on a gently sloping hillside plot, elevated above the fields providing a commanding view over the surrounding countryside, yet with great screening to the boundary giving a good degree of privacy too.

Cookham Dean is one of the area’s most coveted locations with countless public footpaths and bridleways dissecting the area through National Trust and Woodland Trust.

The wider area opens out to yet more glorious rolling countryside and a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The village is idyllic providing the perfect blend of town and country – being distinctly rural in feel yet retaining excellent convenience with the village centre on the doorstep and Marlow town centre being about two miles down Winter Hill.

Cookham Dean is delightfully rural yet perfectly positioned for access to both Marlow and Maidenhead.

The nearby village centre in Cookham Rise offers an excellent supermarket and range of retailers and pubs.

The nearby town of Marlow offers an eclectic mix of local independent and national retailers with numerous bars, cafes and restaurants around the town suited for any occasion.

For commuters, Cookham Rise (about 1 mile away) has a train station with a service to Paddington (via Maidenhead), with a Crossrail connection at Maidenhead due in 2022. The M40 and M4 motorways are easily accessed from the A404(M).

A comprehensive range of private and state schooling options, both primary and secondary, in the area include Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School which is three miles away, Eton, Harrow, Wycombe Abbey, Caldicot Preparatory School and some excellent schools in the Maidenhead and Henley area.
