Listed village house with treble garage and office on a large plot.

Description

The house is listed as being Grade II of Architectural or Historical Interest and was first mentioned in 1765 as an Inn known as 'The Three Horseshoes' and retained this name as an Inn until 1902. It then became 'The Five Bells' in 1775 and the 'Kings Arms' in 1802 and retained this name until 1902. It later became the Church Street Great Burstead store until early 1980.

The house retains some exceptional period features including timber framing and open fireplaces and is orientated so that the principal rooms and kitchen overlook the beautiful gardens. An solid oak front door opens into an impressive hallway featuring exposed timbers and to the right-hand side is a large, dual-aspect sitting room separated by some exposed studwork and including some fine exposed timbers. There are two fireplaces at either end of the room. On the opposite side of the hall is a separate dining room, again featuring exposed timbers, and adjoining is a study which was once the former general store - a useful room somewhat separated from the main accommodation in the house allowing for quieter home-working conditions. At the rear of the house is a large kitchen/breakfast room fitted with a range of wooden units with integrated appliances and a oak stable door opens which opens onto a sheltered south facing external terrace. At the rear of the kitchen there is a utility room that leads to a walk-in pantry.

The first floor landing features a lovely vaulted exposed ceiling and a secondary staircase provides additional access to one of the bedrooms. In all there are five bedrooms, all featuring period architecture with some fine timbers and sash double glazed windows to the front of the property and mullion double glazed windows at the rear. The principal bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite shower room.

Outside
A gated brick paved driveway passes the side of the house into a substantial parking area at the rear in front of the garaging. The garage has three sets of solid oak doors, opening outwards. There is an internal staircase to a room above, used as offices in recent years. There is also a small shower room. The gardens are predominantly lawned with a small copse towards the end of the garden and planted with masses of spring bulbs.
