Location
The idyllic village of Upton Bishop is just over three miles from Ross-on-Wye, which offers a variety of supermarkets, shops, restaurants, leisure facilities and highly-regarded schools. The village itself features The Moody Cow, a fine-dining country pub, plus the Upton Bishop Millennium Hall, a community centre which is used by many different groups for all types of activities.
The M50 motorway is approximately two miles away and this provides excellent commuter links to the M5 giving good access to Birmingham and Bristol. The A40, also
two miles away, leads to the M4 at Newport, giving good access to Cardiff and London.
The home at a glance
Bramble Combe occupies a charming and secluded site off a very quiet country lane. The drive sweeps through a five bar gate then around a grass circle bordered by large box balls in the centre of which is a Japanese Great White Cherry. There are three such trees in the garden each of which blossoms magnificently in white and cream each Spring.
The entrance to this stone-built country house leads into a hallway where oak beams and timber frames contrast beautifully with the bright white walls. This colour palette is echoed throughout the property.
Just off the entrance hall, there is a substantial cloakroom and WC.
To the right-hand side of the entrance hall, there is a lovely dual aspect country kitchen/dining room. Both sides of this room have French doors giving access to the gardens, so light cascades into the kitchen. The space also has some very lovely features, such as exposed beams, including a beamed archway in the centre of the room. While the room has a natural white and wood colour scheme, there is a lovely pop of vibrant colour above the gas-fired Britannia Range Cooker where decorative tiles, handmade by a Hay-on-Wye based artist, tastefully depict a variety of fruit and vegetables. The kitchen also includes solid oak and slate work surfaces, a multitude of floor and eye level cupboards and a pantry. There is also an integrated dishwasher and a double Belfast sink. In addition, there is a lovely island in the centre of the kitchen with a built-in wine rack. Just off the kitchen, there is a utility room which houses a fridge/freezer, washing machine and central heating boiler.
There are also two reception rooms on this level of the property; the largest, the main drawing room is another wonderfully sun-lit, dual aspect space, which includes another set of French doors leading out to the garden. A particularly lovely focal point is the fireplace, made from carved stone and this houses a gas-fired stove. At the opposing end of the room, a delightful alcove is another lovely feature. The second reception room is another light-streamed, dual-aspect space and there is another striking beamed archway which acts as a characterful entrance to the room.
An attractive staircase, going around a wall with timber frames, leads up to the first floor of the property. The master bedroom is a superb space with a vaulted ceiling, exposed beams and ceiling trusses. This is another dual-aspect space and a skylight lets even more light pour in. There is also a large dressing area and a lovely en-suite bathroom, complete with a bath and walk- in shower.
The second large double bedroom on this level of the property is also streamed with light and boasts a lovely en-suite shower room.
A sun-trap patio is set between the main home and the substantial annex. This has a sizeable reception room, which is presently used as an expansive hobby room. There is also a lovely bedroom and a bathroom.
The outside space
The residence is surrounded by a stunning south-facing garden of approximately 2.7 acres (TBV), which is beautifully designed and impeccably maintained. The garden occupies the east, south and west sides of the house and in good weather it is bathed in sunlight all day. The property and garden are also entirely private - no homes overlook the grounds and the garden's gentle Southern slope reinforces the privacy. There are several seating areas scattered around the space, ensuring that all corners of the wonderful garden can be enjoyed.
The garden has been divided into several restful "rooms" and unique spaces; a pergola, which supports a labyrinth of roses, leads through the lawns while a series of manicured hedges creates lovely pathways around the grounds. There is a substantial wildlife pond, which is fed by rainwater from the house roof. Water lilies grow here and it offers a peaceful spot for the dragonflies. The pond also attracts nesting ducks and moorhens. A nearby weeping willow gives a peaceful shady area.
There is also a charming woodland garden, a games lawn, an alfresco dining area and extensive kitchen gardens - complete with fruit cage - plus a small orchard with plum and cherry trees. Elsewhere in
the garden, there are several 150-year-old Perry pear trees one of which has been adopted as home by a family of green woodpeckers.
Another striking feature of the garden is the magnificent collection of David Austin Old English roses which add vibrancy, perfume and colour to this stunning garden as they bloom vigorously often well into winter months.
Plans to extend
In November 2021, Herefordshire Council granted planning permission to extend and remodel the existing residence of Bramble Combe. An architect has drawn up plans to create a contemporary- style construction with a pitched roof and skylights to connect the main home with the annex. This would create a very large dining hall, an additional sitting room, a fifth en-suite double bedroom plus a substantial first floor master suite, complete with a dressing room and an en-suite bathroom. There are copies of the architect's plans in Hamilton Stiller's Broad Street office. Please contact the sales team on for further details. Alternatively, please see Herefordshire Council's website and search for application number 213150.
