Alfred Loewenstein, a financier of immense wealth and influence lived in the village in the early 1920s. He is said to have been the third richest man in the world and lived at The Pinfold opposite Groom's Lodge. He fell from a plane on 4th July 1928 - it was rumoured that it was no accident and the case made international headlines.

Groom's Lodge was part of the Lowenstein's stud where he bred racehorses. His stud manager lived in this house. The courtyard at the property used to be the exercise circle for his horses and the dining room was part of the original stable block and was only converted into a dwelling approximately 20yrs ago.
